Welcome to my very first Blog…
I thought I would kick things off with talking about something that has had a profound effect on my own personal self-acceptance but quite frankly seemed silly at first to my ADHD brain… ADHD Affirmations are positive, empowering statements that ADHDers repeat to counter negative self-talk and promote compassion.
The positive change definitely wasn’t instant, at first it felt like arguing with myself. My inner critic has had years and years of being in control and never having a day off and trying to change this neural pathway was not going to be a walk in the park. I made the mistake of trying to master every one that resonated with me which was a lot! This lead to overwhelm and my impatience that it wasn’t going to be an instant fix. I battled on and kept things simple by picking one phase for a full week, I then started connecting them to a particular habit.
Slowly I realised that leaning on these phrases especially during stressful or overwhelming moments was surprisingly giving me emotional safety.. which I’m sure you will agree is worth its weight in Gold when you have ADHD.
ADHD affirmations can help us rewire our self critical brains and increase self-confidence and acceptance. They can boost your mood, enhance focus, and keep negative self talk under control instead of it wreaking havoc roaming free. I found that they would serve as an interruption so I could get enough control to stop myself spiralling into a complete emotional meltdown which would take me a long time to recover from. I can't promise it will work every time, but I can promise that by using them you will build a kinder, more compassionate relationship with yourself.
Here are some examples of positive affirmations for ADHD:
I may not be where I want to be yet, and I am moving forward on my goals.
I am not lazy or faulty, my brain is simply wired differently..and that’s OK.
This is only temporary, you will not feel like this forever even though it seems that way right now. Breathe through it.
I am worthy of success and happiness.
I forgive myself for my past mistakes and commit to learning from them with patience and kindness.
I do not have to apologise for being my true natural self.
I celebrate my strengths and quirks.
I can make the changes I want to make.
My mind works in creative and unique ways.
I accept myself fully, including moments of chaos and distraction.
I will not let other people’s opinions of my worth define me.
My ADHD gives me unique strengths and abilities.
A clear plan creates a clear mind.
One task at a time.
